Overview in School of Electrical and Information Engineering

The School of Electrical and Information Engineering was established in 1977 and currently offers six undergraduate programs: Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Automation, Electronic Information Engineering, Communication Engineering, and Information Engineering. Among these, Electrical Engineering and Automation and Automation are national-level first-class undergraduate programs, while Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments and Communication Engineering are provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs in Hubei Province. The Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments program has passed engineering education accreditation, and the applications for engineering education accreditation for Communication Engineering, Automation, and Electrical Engineering and Automation have been accepted. The Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments program is a "Hubei Provincial Brand Program" and a "Hubei Provincial Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industry Talent Training Program," while Automation and Electrical Engineering and Automation are "Excellent Engineer" programs under the Hubei Provincial "Jingchu Excellent Talents" Collaborative Education Program. The school currently has over 400 graduate students and over 2200 undergraduate students.

The college currently has 100 faculty and staff members, including 78 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 15 professors, 37 associate professors, 51 teachers with doctoral degrees, 11 teachers with overseas study experience, and 65 master's degree supervisors. One faculty member enjoys a special allowance from the State Council, one is a Hubei Province Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Expert, four are selected for the Hubei Province New Century High-level Talent Project, three are provincial-level specially appointed professors, and four are university-level distinguished teachers. One faculty member was named an Outstanding Communist Party Member of Hubei Province, and one was awarded the title of one of Hubei Province's Top Ten Model Teachers of Morality.

The college currently offers one doctoral program in Control Science and Engineering, two master's programs in Control Science and Engineering and Information and Communication Engineering, and two professional master's degree programs in Electronic Information and Energy Power. Control Science and Engineering is a characteristic discipline of Hubei Province, and "Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Control" is a key characteristic discipline cluster of Hubei Province. In the fifth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, Control Science and Engineering was successfully listed. In May 2021, Power Electronics Engineering entered the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The college possesses several research and teaching platforms, including the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Optical Information and Pattern Recognition, the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Cross-Media Detection and Target Recognition (GF), the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Robotics, the Hubei Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Video Image and High-Definition Projection, and the Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Electronic Information and Control.

The college has developed five relatively stable research directions: pattern recognition and intelligent systems, chemical process detection and automation devices, information acquisition, detection and processing, and advanced control theory and process control. In the past five years, the college has undertaken more than 500 research projects, including key projects of the Central Military Commission's Science and Technology Commission and major national engineering projects; it has won one first prize of the Ministry of Education's Technological Invention Award, one second prize of the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award, one second prize of Hubei Provincial Natural Science Award, four second prizes of Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and 10 other provincial and ministerial-level (including industry association) science and technology achievement awards. The college's faculty members have published more than 500 academic papers in domestic and international journals.

The college focuses on technological innovation to enhance students' comprehensive qualities and improve the quality of talent cultivation. In the past three years, students have won over 350 provincial-level awards and over 260 national-level awards in Ministry of Education Category A subject competitions. Among these, one student won a national bronze medal in the 2020 "Challenge Cup" China College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, and one student won a national silver medal in the 2021 7th China International "Internet+" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Graduates are highly sought after by employers, with a 100% employment rate for postgraduate students and over 95% for undergraduate students.

Over the past 40 years, the college has grown from the Department of Automation to the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, from a single major in Automation to six majors including Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Electronic Information Engineering, and from a little over a hundred students to more than two thousand students today. The development of the college is a glorious history of entrepreneurship and struggle. This is thanks to the country's emphasis on higher education, the strong support of the university, the hard work of all faculty, staff and students, and especially the selfless dedication and full support of alumni.
